Wydanie „Blood Sugar Sex Magik” było dla RHCP jednocześnie błogosławieństwem i przekleństwem. Błogosławieństwem, gdyż zespół dzięki tej płycie wzniósł się na wyżyny sławy. Zaczął być rozpoznawalny na całym świecie i zyskał miliony słuchaczy. Przekleństwem, bo to właśnie przez przytłaczającą popularność odszedł z zespołu aż na sześć długich lat John Frusciante.

Zanim zaczęto nagrywać płytę, panowie postanowili zmienić wytwórnię. „Wiedzieliśmy, że płyta którą zamierzamy zrobić, będzie najwspanialszym dziełem muzycznym w historii. A EMI po prostu na nas nie zasługuje. Zawsze byli beznadziejni”- mówił Kiedis. Umowę z EMI, zobowiązującą do nagrania jeszcze trzech płyt udało się rozwiązać. W kolejce ustawiło się kilka znanych wytwórni. Jednak wszystkie oferty przebiło Epic Records. Za nagranie trzech płyt zaoferowali prawie 6 mln dolarów. I gdy już wydawało się, że wszystko załatwione, do Anthony’ego zadzwonił Mo Ostin, prezes Warner Brothers. Oficjalnie urzekł Kiedisa i spółkę swoim „ludzkim podejściem”. Nieoficjalnie- 10 milionami dolarów.



Trzeba było jeszcze znaleźć nowego producenta. Panowie mieli serdecznie dość „sierżanta Beinhorna”, a najbardziej miał go dosyć John. Wybór padł na Ricka Rubina, ojca sukcesów Bestie Boys. Brodaty producent o ksywce „DJ Double R” był ponoć „najbardziej inteligentnym i światowym człowiekiem” z jakim kiedykolwiek współpracowało RHCP. Początkowo próby odbywały się w sali prób zwanej „Alleyway”. Jednak Rick zarządził przeprowadzkę do posiadłości przy Laurel Canzon Boulevard. Piękny pałac gościł wcześniej takie sławy jak Harry Houdini, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin i Mick Jagger. Hacjenda przypadła chłopakom z zespołu do gustu. „Kiedy wprowadzasz się do takiego domu, kreujesz własne środowisko. Możesz robić co chcesz- mieszkać, pracować, uprawiać seks”- zachwalał Flea. Na parterze urządzono przestrzeń do wspólnego grania natomiast na piętrze- pokoje mieszkalne. Tylko Chad nie zdecydował się zamieszkać w willi- uważał ją za nawiedzoną (nie bezpodstawnie) i codziennie dojeżdżał do niej swoim motorem. Ich album „Nevermind” odnosił właśnie ogromny sukces komercyjny. Anthony skontaktował się z Dave’m Grohlem, ówczesnym perkusistą Nirvany. Szybko doszli do porozumienia. Wtedy jednak foszka strzelił frontman Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan. Poszło oczywiście o kobietę. Odmówił występowania na jednej scenie z Kurtem Cobainem, gdyż ten był obecnie partnerem jego byłej dziewczyny, Courtney Love. Wskutek tego, na ich miejsce zostali ponownie przyjęci panowie z Pearl Jam.

Pod koniec lutego zespół miał wystąpić w programie „Saturday Night Live”. Oddajmy głos Anthony’emu:

”Byliśmy w studiu nie dłużej niż pięć minut, kiedy John zaczął się kłócić z ekipą. Realizator dźwięku, facet, który pracował w programie od lat, podszedł do Johna i zrobił jakąś nieszkodliwą uwagę. John odwrócił się do niego plecami i oznajmił Louie:
-Jak ten facet powie do mnie jeszcze jedno słowo, nie borę udziału w tym pieprzonym programie.[…]

John przybył na miejsce trochę wcześniej, reszta zjawiła się na miejscu wieczorem. Od razu otrzymali straszną nowinę- Frusciante odszedł zespołu i chce natychmiast wrócić do domu. Zespół usiadł i zaczął rozmawiać. „Nie mogę być już dłużej w zespole. Osiągnąłem stan, w którym nie mogę dobrze wykonywać rzeczy, które razem stworzyliśmy z powodu stresu i zmęczenia. Nie mogę dać zespołowi tego, co przedtem”- Anthony przytoczył słowa Johna w wywiadzie dla „Rolling Stone Magazine”. Udało się go namówić na ten ostatni występ. Choć jak wspominał Kiedis w „Bliźnie” „[…] żałowałem, że nie odwołaliśmy koncertu i nie zwróciliśmy widzom pieniędzy za bilety, zamiast skazywać ich na ten pokaz chorej energii.”

No ale trasę trzeba było dokończyć. Dwa koncerty w Japonii odwołano. Natomiast na festiwalu „Lollapalooza” w roli wiosłowego zadebiutował Arik Marshall. Anthony w swej biografii mówił o nim „Arik był introwertykiem, dlatego napięcie rozładowywał snem. Ten skubaniec spał dzień i noc, po czym wsiadał do autobusu i spał w drodze na koncert. Nigdy jednak nas nie zawiódł. Wychodził na scenę i grał aż miło.”



Lollapalooza to był taki objazdowy festiwal. Jego ideą jest zaprezentowanie wielu stylów muzycznych na jednej scenie. I tak, w 1992r na scenie głównej obok RHCP pojawili się m in Ministry, Ice Cube i Soundgarden. „To było zdecydowanie wydarzenie dla dzieciaków, które nie chcą patrzeć ciągle na to samo nudne gówno”- tak ten festiwal opisywał Flea. „Mogą tu spędzić cały dzień, bawić się i usłyszeć różne gatunki muzyczne. To byłą całkowicie pozytywna, piękna rzecz”. Co ciekawe, Kiedis forsował pomysł, aby na Lollapalooza zagrał żeński zespół rockowy „L7”. Twierdził bowiem, że line-up festiwalu jest „zbyt męski” i „zbyt zorientowany na gitarowe brzmienie.” Ostatecznie jego pomysł wyśmiano.
